Perth Energy

Perth Energy Pty Ltd is an energy supplier in Western Australia with a reputation for innovation and customer service. We have been at the forefront of industry reform to bring competition and value to energy users throughout the State. As an electricity retailer Perth Energy liaises directly with consumers and ensures that their energy requirements are met and supplied at an optimal price with minimal disruption.

Perth Energy's detailed knowledge of the WA market and hands-on experience in the energy supply industry has enabled us to provide a high quality customer management service, assisting our customers at the strategic and operational levels on a day to day basis.

Perth Energy is majority owned by Infratil Australia Limited (IAL), a subsidiary of NZ stock exchange listed Infratil Limited, which owns a portfolio of energy and infrastructure assets in Australia, NZ and Europe. Infratil, through NZ's TrustPower, owns approximately 585MW of generation assets. TrustPower, together with Victoria Electricity, have close to 500,000 retail customers.

Perth Energy take power from a number of generation sources and mix it with power bought at spot from the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) to supply our customers. The power sources include eight landfill gas based renewable energy generators in the Perth metropolitan area owned by independent power producers (IPP).

Perth Energy's customers are commercial and industrial, as electricity reform in WA has not reached the residential market or very small business users. The current "contestability threshold" is 5.7kW average demand or 50,000kWh of consumption per year.

Against the background of a past restrictive network access regime prior to the introduction of the WEM, Perth Energy successfully brokered IPP capacity to some of the State's largest electricity users. This capacity was excess capacity from self-supply resources projects that would have otherwise been left unused.

Perth Energy also fostered the development of independent renewable energy projects by buying or placing their power in the fledgling contestable market. We pioneered the supply of green power to a number of environmentally conscious customers including a large number of local government councils.

Perth Energy optimises the benefit to our partners and customers by managing the capacity and loads as portfolios. Recognising the shortcomings of the past energy industry structure, we established a trading system that leveraged the strengths of various aspects of our business. This approach has seen constant improvement to our retail operation by offering our customers the most competitive pricing within a flexible value adding framework.
