Urban Renewables Workshop - 5 August 2009

WA SEA CEO Ray Wills was in the UK and parts of Europe earlier this year and met with British and Scottish Government officials, UK and EU businesses and industry associations, and attended a number of sustainable energy events. He has come back with some observations on the markets in the UK and EU, and will present these together some comparison to the Australian market, and some insights into the need for action in Australia.

Following the recently announced consultation period for the changes to the R&D tax Concession / Credit scheme, WA SEA is looking to provide a submission to Treasury on behalf of members. Due to the importance of R&D to many of our members, WA SEA would like to invite you to attend a feedback session to hear your ideas and opinions on the potential impact of the proposed R&D legislation changes on your business.

5 September 2008 Prof Ross Garnaut report policy discussion

Friday 5 September 2008 WA SEA members are invited to attend a lunchtime screening of Prof Ross Garnaut's presentation to the National Press Club broadcast on ABC1. Following the broadcast, we will discuss the presentation and consider a response from WA SEA. Please note - this is a member only event; new members welcome. 21 July 2008, Christof Ruehl - BP Statistical Review of World Energy

For over 55 years BP has undertaken a comprehensive review of world energy markets to produce the Statistical Review of World Energy. Published in June each year, the Review is one of the most widely respected publications in energy economics. This review provides timely and reliable energy information relating to oil, gas and coal reserves, production and consumption; and renewable energy production and consumption to key decision makers in the international business community.

Christof Ruehl, Group Chief Economist and Vice President of BP, returned to Perth to give an exclusive presentation of the 2008 Statistical Review of World Energy. Full details are available from the BP website.

17 May 2008 - Hon Paul Llewellyn and WA SEA present a breakfast with Hans-Josef Fell, German Member of Parliament.

Hans-Josef Fell is a German Member of Parliament who framed the German Renewable Energy Sources Law. The law, ratified on 25 February 2000, guarantees cost-covering Feed-in Tariffs for electricity from biomass, wind power, and solar power, and aims to increase the percentage of renewable energy used in Germany by the year 2010.

Thursday 17 April 2008 BP and WA SEA brought you Brooke Miller: "Towards a Solar Nation" 

Brooke Miller, Regional Director, BP Solar Australasia, examined the commercial and policy challenges faced by the Solar Photovoltaic industry as it seeks to increase its contribution to Australian electricity supplies.

Wednesday 2 April 2008 and Thursday 3 April 2008 - WA SEA ran  four workshops as a special initiative to better establish an understanding of our industry and to assist in our efforts to better lobby government. WA SEA members helped define Challenges and Opportunities for the Sustainable Energy Industry in Western Australia. If you missed the workshop, please submit any comments via email. Details on the attached flyer.

The results from the survey and workshops will be combined to provide us with the best information about the sustainable energy industry in Western Australia and to assist WA SEA in our efforts to better lobby government on the needs of our industry. 

Science aloud - Science at Parliament March 2008
A Science at Parliament breakfast was held at Parliament House, hosted by veteran TV journalist Jeff McMullen, to allow leading WA scientists to inform State politicians about current research affecting their policy areas.

A panel of four scientists led the discussion, including questions and answers from the audience of State parliamentarians, who were also encouraged to speak more informally with scientists after the breakfast.

Forty of the top environmental scientists were invited to a Gubernatorial science forum on the topic "Adapting to Climate Change". Speakers included Dr Ray Wills, chief executive officer of the WA Sustainable Energy Association and Mr Kevin Goss, chief executive officer of the Future Farm Industries Cooperative Research Centre.

Solar Taxi event

Swiss Adventurer Louis Palmer started his trip around the world in his solar powered vehicle, the "Solar taxi". The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and three Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences have been involved in its making, integrating the latest technologies including high efficiency solar cells for power, ZEBRA batteries providing a 400 km range, and a flexible steering-wheel that allows the passenger to drive the vehicle, running at a maximum speed of 90 kph the sustainable way. He presented his story to the half way point to a business audience who were captured by his adventure, his passion and his hope for the future - thanks Louis.
